Rex Grossman has agreed to a one-year deal to return to the Washington Redskins.

Grossman's return gives the Redskins the same trio of quarterbacks as last season, and his veteran presence is an extra piece of insurance in case Robert Griffin III doesn't recover from a serious knee injury by Week 1 in September.

Grossman agreed to the deal Wednesday. He's played nine NFL seasons and once took the Chicago Bears to the Super Bowl, but he again is projected to be the third-stringer behind Griffin and Kirk Cousins.

Griffin had reconstructive surgery on his right knee in January. Cousins is expected to work with the starters during the spring minicamps and other offseason workouts.
