The Edmonton Oilers have acquired veteran forward Jerred Smithson from the Florida Panthers for a fourth-round draft pick.

Smithson has 38 goals and 57 assists in parts of 10 NHL seasons with Los Angeles, Nashville and Florida. He had two goals and three assists in 35 games with the Panthers this season.

Oilers coach Ralph Krueger says Wednesday that Smithson brings the team size and depth, and is "like a 53, 54 percent faceoff guy, just a defensive centerman."

Edmonton general manager Steve Tambellini expects Smithson to join the team over the weekend since the forward's wife was due to give birth to their first child any day.
