The National Hockey League handed down a two- game suspension to Tampa Bay Lightning forward Nate Thompson on Saturday.

Thompson was not penalized for delivering what was later deemed an illegal check to the head of New Jersey Devils forward Matt D'Agostini in the second period of Tampa Bay's 5-4 shootout win on Friday.

The 28-year-old native of Alaska will forfeit $9,729.72 in salary, which goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

He will be eligible to return on Apr. 6, when the Bolts play at Uniondale against the New York Islanders. Thompson will miss games with Florida and Carolina while serving his punishment.
