Authorities say six people sustained minor injuries in chaotic scenes as thousands of fans tried to buy tickets for the inaugural soccer game at the Arena Fonte Nova in northeastern Brazil, one of the venues for next year's World Cup.

Police used pepper spray and tear gas to contain the crowd in the city of Salvador after fans began to clash as organizers started running out of tickets Friday.

Some fans tried to break through the stadium's gates to get inside the stadium.

Most of the 40,000 tickets for the game between local rivals Bahia and Vitoria had already been sold online.

Earlier Friday, a worker died after a fall at the construction site of the Arena da Amazonia, which also will be used in the 2014 World Cup.
