Bucknell has rewarded men's basketball coach Dave Paulsen with a new five-year contract.

Terms were not disclosed, but the new deal takes effect immediately and runs through the 2017-18 season.

Bucknell just completed a 28-6 season with a loss to Butler in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The 28 wins set a school record for the Bison, who made their second NCAA appearance in the last three years.

"The Bucknell men's basketball program has achieved an incredible amount of success under the leadership of head coach Dave Paulsen, and I am pleased that Dave will be here to continue to grow the storied tradition of Bison basketball," said athletic director John Hardt on Thursday. "Since his arrival at Bucknell, Dave has shown an unwavering commitment to our scholar-athlete model. In addition, program's players and coaches have represented themselves and our university in exemplary fashion. The passion and enthusiasm that he brings to work every day have clearly rubbed off on his team and his staff. The landscape of college basketball is rapidly changing, and I look forward to working with Dave through these new and exciting challenges."

Numerous higher profile coaching positions have opened recently, possibly necessitating the urgency to give Paulsen a new deal to stay with the mid- major program.

Paulsen has guided Bucknell to a record of 99-65 in five years, including a 78-24 mark over the past three seasons. The Bison became the first team in Patriot League history to win three straight outright regular-season titles and also took the conference tournament crowns in 2011 and 2013.

After failing to win the Patriot tourney in 2012, the Bison earned a berth in the NIT and beat Arizona in the first round of that tournament.

"I am sincerely grateful and humbled by the support that I have received from President Bravman and John Hardt and look forward to working with them to make Bison basketball the best it can be on the court, in the classroom, and in the community," said Paulsen.

Before taking over at Bucknell, Paulsen was a head coach for eight seasons at Division III Williams College and three years each at Le Moyne and St. Lawrence. He has an overall record of 361-185.
