New York, NY – Boxer Robert Guerrero was arrested Thursday after trying to bring a gun on a plane at John F. Kennedy International Airport.
The current WBC welterweight champion attempted to board a plane at JFK Airport with an unloaded .40-caliber handgun -- along with three unloaded magazine clips -- but was apprehended by police after he presented the gun in a locked box to a ticket agent while he was checking in for his flight.
He legally registered the gun in his home state of California, but faces a felony charge because he does not have the firearm licensed in the state of New York.
"I hope that Mr. Guerrero fights better than he thinks," Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown said in statement. "For anyone who hasn't gotten the message, let me be crystal clear. You cannot bring an unlicensed weapon -- loaded or unloaded -- into this country or into this city. And if you do you will be arrested and face felony charges."
Guerrero was arraigned Thursday at the New York State Supreme Court for Queens County on charges of illegally traveling with an unloaded pistol and three unloaded high capacity bullet magazines. He was released on his own recognizance and ordered to appear in court on May 14. If convicted, Guerrero faces up to seven years in prison.
The 30-year-old is set to face Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 4 in Las Vegas. The charges will likely not impact the fight.
"We are very pleased Robert Guerrero was released on his own recognizance this afternoon in the wake of this incident and that he is on his way back to Las Vegas to continue training for his highly anticipated May 4 bout against Mayweather," a statement read from Team Guerrero, Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions.
