Kikkan Randall (Anchorage, Alaska) became the first American woman to break into the top three overall at a FIS Cross-Country World Cup on March 24 in Falun, Sweden. Starting the day in 15th, Randall skied to seventh in the 10-kilometer freestyle pursuit, which moved her to the third overall spot.
A MOGUL'S MOGUL
Hannah Kearney (Norwich, Vt.) clinched her fourth world cup moguls' title after winning the FIS Freestyle World Cup on March 22 in Sierra Nevada, Spain. She took the title by 91 points over Canada's Justine Dufour-Lapoint. A day later, Alexi Micinski (Meridian, Idaho) took her first world cup victory in women's slopestyle, while Lyman Currier (Boulder, Colo.) grabbed his first victory in the men's event.
CURLING
The U.S. secured a spot in the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games after finishing fourth at the 2013 World Women's Curling Championship on March 24 in Riga, Latvia. Team USA worked its way to the bronze-medal match, but lost to Canada, 8-6, to finish with a 7-7 record.
DIVING
Dwight Dumais (Ventura, Calif.) and Troy Dumais (Austin, Texas) finished fourth in the men's 3-meter final at the FINA Diving World Series on March 21 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The brothers scored 403.32 points, 2.85 points behind the bronze medalists. A day later, Troy Dumais competed in the individual 3-meter event and placed fifth.
EQUESTRIAN
McLain Ward (Brewster, N.Y.) bested an all-star field at the $100,000 Suncast 1.50 Meter Championship Jumper Series Final during week 11 of the 2013 FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival on March 23 in Wellington, Fla. McLain piloted Zander to win in 43.86 seconds.
FENCING
Two-time Olympic champion Mariel Zagunis (Beaverton, Ore.) finished third at the Moscow Grand Prix on March 23 to claim her fifth consecutive international medal. Zagunis won her first four bouts, but lost to Russia's Sofiya Velikaya, 15-14, en route to the bronze.
London 2012 Olympians Alexander Massialas (San Francisco, Calif.) and Michael Mills (Short Hills, N.J.) captured the foil and saber NCAA titles on March 24 in San Antonio. Massialas, a freshman at Stanford University, overcame a six- point deficit in the semifinals to win the men's foil. Mills, a junior at the University of Pennsylvania, registered a 15-14 win in the semifinals en route to the men's saber title.
FIELD HOCKEY
The U.S. Women's Indoor Field Hockey U-19 Team completed the first half of its South American tour, 1-2, against host nation Argentina. The U.S. opened the tour with a 6-4 win on March 23 before losing twice the following day. The tournament will conclude on March 27.
GYMNASTICS
Jake Dalton (Reno, Nev.) won the vault at the world cup on March 24 in Cottbus, Germany. Dalton scored a 15.187 to win the title over Russia's Mikhail Kudashov. Brandon Wynn (Columbus, Ohio) finished fourth on the parallel bars, and Glen Ishino (Santa Ana, Calif.) placed fifth on the horizontal bar.
Led by an all-around win from Simone Biles (Spring, Texas), the U.S. women's team won the senior team title at the 2013 Jesolo Trophy competition on March 23 in Jesolo, Italy. Team USA secured the top-six spots in the all-around competition, led by Biles.
JUDO
Kayla Harrison (Wakefield, Mass.) took gold in the women's 70 kg. division at the Pan American Open on March 23 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Harrison won the gold against Yuri Alvear of Colombia with an arm bar for ippon. Also medaling for Team USA were Samantha Bleier (Colorado Springs, Colo.) at 78 kg. and Hannah Martin (Glenville, N.Y.) at 63 kg., who both captured silver.
MODERN PENTATHLON
Margaux Isaksen (Fayetteville, Ark.) won her first world cup event on March 23 in Monaco. Isaksen pedaled from 17th to third after the riding portion, and then held off the field in the combined event to secure the victory. She finished in 12:48.70 and amassed 5,268 points.
ROWING
The U.S. won medals in five of the six events it entered at the 2013 Samsung World Rowing Cup, which ran from March 22-24 in Penrith, Australia. The U.S. won silver in the women's pair, women's quadruple sculls, women's eight and men's eight, and bronze in the women's single sculls.
SOCCER
The U.S. Men's National Team fought through blizzard conditions to earn a 1-0 victory against Costa Rica in the final round of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifying on March 22 in Commerce City, Colo. Clint Dempsey (Nacogdoches, Texas) scored his 32nd career goal in the 16th minute of the match.
SHOOTING
Vincent Hancock (Eatonton, Ga.) won the skeet shooting gold medal at the ISSF World Cup in Acapulco, Mexico. It marked the eighth career world cup medal for Hancock, the reigning two-time Olympic gold medalist.
SKI/SNOWBOARD
Ted Ligety (Park City, Utah) capped a career-best season with a massive 1.48- second slalom victory at the U.S. Alpine Championships, which ran from March 21-24 in Squaw Valley, Calif. Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, Calif.) won the women's giant slalom by .88 of a second over Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, Colo.) for a record 16th U.S. title. On the men's side, Tim Jitloff (Reno, Nev.) completed the course in 1:44.81 to boost his U.S. title count to four. In the super-G, Laurenne Ross (Bend, Ore.) earned her first U.S. title with a mere .01-second victory over Stacey Cook (Mammoth Mountain, Calif.), while Travis Ganong (Squaw Valley, Calif.) carved down his home mountain for the men's title.
Kelly Clark (West Dover, Vt.) secured her 62nd podium and the gold medal at the X Games women's halfpipe on March 20 in Tignes, France. Elena Hight (South Lake Tahoe, Calif.) rode away with silver and Arielle Gold (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) grabbed bronze. On the men's side, Louie Vito (Sandy, Utah) claimed his second X Games gold on his 25th birthday with his third-run score of 92.66. McRae Williams (Salt Lake City, Utah) won the men's ski slopestyle with a score of 94.33, while teammate Gus Kenworthy (Tellirude, Colo.) took bronze. It marked Williams' first X Games medal. A day later, Torin Yater-Wallace (Basalt, Colo.) and David Wise (Reno, Nev.) finished one-two in the men's halfpipe. On the women's side, Maddie Bowman (South Lake Tahoe, Calif.) won bronze. Jamie Anderson (South Lake Tahoe, Calif.) had a technical third run to win silver in snowboard slopestyle.
SPEEDSKATING
Shani Davis (Chicago, Ill.) finished the season strong, winning the bronze medal in the men's 1,000-meter race at the ISU World Single Distance Championships on March 22 in Sochi, Russia. The two-time Olympian crossed the line in 1:09.30. Also claiming bronze was Brittany Bowe (Salt Lake City, Utah), who finished the women's 1,000 in 1:15.87.
SWIMMING
U.S. National Swimming Team member Elizabeth Pelton (Fairfield, Conn.) of the University of California set the American, U.S. Open, NCAA and NCAA championships meet record in the 200-yard backstroke at the NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships on March 23 in Indianapolis. She touched the wall in 1:47.84.
TENNIS
Sam Querrey (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) rallied past Poland's Lukasz Kubot, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, in the second round of the Sony Open on March 23 in Key Biscayne, Fla. He delivered 12 aces in the match.
TRACK & FIELD
The U.S. captured the silver medal in the senior men's 12-kilometer race at the IAAF World Cross-Country Championships on March 24 in Bydgoszcz, Poland. The podium appearance marked Team USA's best finish since 1984 and first medal since 2001. Ben True's (Hanover, N.H.) sixth-place finish was the highest at the world championships for the U.S. since Todd Williams in 1995.
VOLLEYBALL
The U.S. claimed three medals at the NORECA Beach Circuit on March 23 in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands. Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.) secured the men's silver medal. On the women's side, Jenny Kropp (Grand Island, Neb.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) earned the silver, while Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.) captured bronze.
WATER SKIING
Freddy Krueger (Winter Garden, Fla.) won the men's jumping title at the Eyres Night Jump on March 23 in Perth, Australia. Krueger jumped 209 feet to win the title for the second consecutive year.
