Point guard play will probably be pivotal when fourth-seeded Michigan State plays fifth-seeded Memphis for a spot in the round of 16.

The Spartans often win when Keith Appling plays well, and struggle when he's doesn't. The Tigers usually rise or fall on the play of Joe Jackson.

On Saturday, only one point guard will be able to help his team advance.

The leading scorers for both teams are coming off good games.

Appling had 15 points, making three 3-pointers, Thursday when Michigan State opened the NCAA tournament with a 65-54 win over Valparaiso. Jackson scored 14, connecting on a pair of shots beyond the arc, to help Memphis hold off Saint Mary's.
