U.S. ice dancers Meryl Davis (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and Charlie White (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) captured their second world ice dancing title at the 2013 ISU World Figure Skating Championships on March 16 in London, Ontario. The five-time national champions compiled 189.56 points to complete a perfect season.
FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING
Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, Colo.) won the season-long slalom title with a come-from-behind victory at the FIS Alpine World Cup in Lenzerheide, Switzerland. With the win, the 18-year-old became the first U.S. slalom world cup champion since 1984.
BASEBALL
Team USA went 1-2 in the second round of the World Baseball Classic, held March 12-15, in Miami. The U.S. topped Puerto Rico, 7-1, on March 12 before dropping consecutive games to the Dominican Republic, 3-1, and Puerto Rico, 4-3.
BIATHLON
Tim Burke (Paul Smiths, N.Y.) placed fourth in the 15-kilometer mass start on March 17 at the IBU World Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. Teammate Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, N.Y.) led the way in the 12.5K pursuit on March 16, finishing 10th.
BOBSLED & SKELETON
Annie O'Shea (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and John Daly (Smithtown, N.Y.) raced to gold at the 2013 U.S. National Skeleton Championships on March 12-13 in Lake Placid, N.Y. Daly bested teammate Matt Antoine (Prairie du Chien, Wis.) by just 0.09 of a second, while Savannah Graybill (Denver, Pa.) finished second in the women's competition for the second consecutive year.
BOWLING
Team Breakpoint Pro Shop 2 of Sartell, Minn., rolled games of 1,128, 1,124 and 1,106 to defeat Towne and Country Lanes 1 of Hartland, Wis., and move into first place at the 2013 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships in Reno, Nev.
CURLING
Team USA notched a 2-2 record through three days of competition at the World Women's Curling Championship, which runs March 16-24, in Riga, Latvia. The U.S. defeated Italy to open play before losing to Germany and Sweden, each by a point. The U.S. bounced back to defeat Denmark, 7-6, on March 18.
After the third draw, teams from Washington and New Jersey remain undefeated at the 2013 Mixed National Curling Championship, held March 16-23, in Willmar, Minn.
DIVING
Olympian Troy Dumais (Ventura, Calif.) and younger brother Dwight Dumais (Ventura, Calif.) teamed up to finish fifth in the synchronized 3-meter final of the FINA Diving World Series in Beijing. Troy Dumais also competed in the individual 3-meter event, scoring 424.20 points.
FENCING
Mariel Zagunis (Beaverton, Ore.) battled her way to silver at the saber world cup on March 17 in Antalya, Turkey. Zagunis was joined in the top eight by teammates Dagmara Wozniak (Avenel, N.J.) and Ibtihaj Muhammad (Maplewood, N.J.), who finished fifth and seventh.
Carly Weber-Levine (Old Field, N.Y.) claimed gold in the division II women's saber competition at the March North American Cup on March 15 in Reno, Nev. Weber-Levine was joined on the podium by Rose Adams (Sacramento, Calif.) and Kaleigh Mentzer (Boston, Mass.) In the division II men's foil, Sidarth Kumbla (San Jose, Calif.) was the top U.S. finisher, claiming bronze. Also at the North American Cup, Curtis Lovejoy (College Park, Md.) and Josh Russell (Mendenhall, Miss.) claimed second and third in the wheelchair men's epee.
FIGURE SKATING
In ladies competition, Ashley Wagner (Alexandria, Va.) and Gracie Gold (Chicago, Ill.) finished fifth and sixth at the 2013 ISU World Figure Skating Championships in London, Ontario, securing three slots for U.S. women in the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. Max Aaron (Scottsdale, Ariz.) was the top U.S. men's finisher in seventh, while the pairs tandem of Alexa Scimeca (Addison, Ill.) and Chris Knierim (San Diego, Calif.) led the U.S. in ninth.
GYMNASTICS
Team USA hauled in five medals at the 2013 Flower Cup on March 17 in Aalsmeer, Netherlands. Steven Gluckstein (Atlantic Highlands, N.J.) led the U.S. by capturing gold in the men's trampoline competition. Gluckstein's brother, Jeffrey Gluckstein (Atlantic Highlands, N.J.), finished second in the competition, while Savannah Vinsant (Lafayette, La.) took silver in the women's trampoline. In the junior competitions, Cody Gesuelli (Middletown, N.J.) won bronze in the junior men's trampoline and Madi Webster (Odon, Ind.) won silver in the junior women's.
JUDO
The U.S. brought home nine medals - two golds, two silvers and five bronzes - from the Pan American Open, held March 16-17 in Montevideo, Uruguay. Travis Stevens (Wakefield, Mass.; -81 kg.) and Samantha Bleier (Colorado Springs, Colo.; -78 kg.) each won gold.
LUGE
Erin Hamlin (Remsen, N.Y.) slid to the top spot at the 2013 Norton National Seeding race No. 4 on March 17 in Lake Placid, N.Y. Hamlin posted a total time of 1:28.831 to win. Taylor Morris (South Jordan, Utah) was the fastest man in Lake Placid, posting 1:44.459 to win the men's race. In doubles competition, Tyler Andersen (Alpine, Utah) and Anthony Espinoza (Park City, Utah) won by two-tenths of a second.
SKI & SNOWBOARD
Ted Ligety (Park City, Utah) won his sixth giant slalom race of the world cup season on March 16 in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia. With the victory, Ligety secured the season world cup giant slalom title and finished third overall in the final world cup standings.
Meanwhile, despite being at home recovering from knee surgery, Lindsey Vonn (Vail, Colo.) garnered the downhill world cup title on March 13.
Hannah Kearney rebounded from a 14th-place finish in the single moguls to win the dual moguls title at the world cup event on March 16 in Are, Sweden. Meanwhile, Heather McPhie (Bozeman, Mont.) won the single moguls title on March 15. Men's mogul skier Brad Wilson (Butte, Mont.) finished third. Joe Sensson (Killington, Vt.) skied to fourth place in a FIS Freestyle World Cup skicross event on March 16 in Are, Sweden.
Ski jumper Sarah Hendrickson (Park City, Utah) claimed her third world cup title of the season on March 15 in Trondheim, Norway, before capturing her fourth world cup crown two days later in Oslo, Norway.
Sean Halsted (Ephrata, Wash.) raced into fourth place at the IPC Nordic World Cup long cross-country race on March 18 at the Laura Cross Country Ski Center in Sochi, Russia. Teammates Dan Cnossen (Topeka, Kan.) and Andy Soule (Pearland, Texas) finished 12th and 17th in the cross-country sprint.
Liz Stephen (E. Montpelier, Vt.) skied to a ninth-place finish in the 30- kilometer freestyle on March 17 at the Holmenkollen Ski Festival in Oslo, Norway. A day earlier, Noah Hoffman (Aspen, Colo.) finished 24th in the 50K mass start. In Nordic combined, Taylor Fletcher (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) led the U.S. with an 11th-place finish, moving up from 23rd after the jump.
SOCCER
The U.S. Women's National Team won the Algrave Cup for the ninth time after Alex Morgan (Diamond Bar, Calif.) netted two goals in the final to defeat Germany, 2-0, on March 13 in Faro, Portugal. Morgan scored in the 13th minute to put the U.S. up, and again in the 33rd minute to secure the win.
SQUASH
Dylan Murray (Bronxville, N.Y.) and Sabrina Sobhy (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) earned victories in the under-19 divisions at the 2013 U.S. Junior Championships on March 17 in New Haven, Conn.
TRACK & FIELD
Paralympian Susannah Scaroni (Tekoa, Wash.) edged teammate Shirley Reilly (Tucson, Ariz.) by 32 seconds to win the women's wheelchair division of the Los Angeles Marathon. On the men's wheelchair side, Krige Schabort (Cedartown, Ga.) set a new course record in 1:30:50. Nick Arciniaga (Flagstaff, Ariz.) finished seventh and Colleen De Reuck (Boulder, Colo.) finished fifth on the women's side.
TRIATHLON
Matt Chrabot (Virginia Beach, Va.) posted a time of 1:54:53 to claim silver at the ITU World Cup on March 16 in Mooloolaba, Australia.
U.S. triathletes scored eight top-10 finishes on March 16 at the Pan American Cup in Sarasota, Fla. Tommy Zaferes (Santa Cruz, Calif.) raced to a second- place finish in a time of 1:44:35, just two seconds behind the winning pace. Joe Maloy (Wildwood Crest, N.J.) finished sixth, while Alicia Kaye (Clermont, Fla.) and Katie Hursey (Hampstead, Md.) placed sixth and seventh in the women's division. T.J. Gleason (Sioux Falls, S.D.) topped the podium in the under-25 development race.
VOLLEYBALL
The University of Nebraska defeated Grand Canyon University, 5-0, to conclude the USA Volleyball Beach Collegiate Challenge on March 17 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.
WATER SKI
U.S. water ski athletes Freddy Krueger (Winter Garden, Fla.), Erika Lang (Gilbert, Ariz.) and Jimmy Siemers (Round Rock, Texas) all captured titles at the 2013 IWWF Water Ski World Cup on March 17 in Mandurah, Australia. Krueger won the men's jumping, while Lang and Siemers earned titles in women's and men's tricks.
