Reading manager Brian McDermott was sacked by the club on Monday following a fourth consecutive loss over the weekend against Aston Villa which left the Royals firmly in the bottom three of the Premier League.
"Reading Football Club has announced today the departure of manager Brian McDermott, the club said in a statement. "Owner Anton Zingarevich wishes to place on record his thanks to Brian who had achieved great success with the club since taking over as manager in December 2009."
"The search for a successor will start immediately and it is hoped that a new manager will be in place as soon as possible to lead the fight against potential relegation."
McDermott, who joined the club in 2000 as a chief scout, succeeded Brendan Rodgers as manager on a full-time basis in January 2010.
Reading are currently 19th in the Premiership with 23 points, level with bottom club Queens Park Rangers.
