Steven Gerrard's 82nd-minute penalty kick handed Liverpool a 3-2 win over Tottenham at Anfield on Sunday, moving the Reds into sixth place in the Premiership table.

Luis Suarez netted his league-leading 22nd goal midway through the first half to put the home side ahead, but Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen scored on either side of halftime to put Spurs 2-1 up.

Gareth Bale had a hand in both goals for Vertonghen as he crossed the ball into the area for the former Ajax man to cut in front of Glen Johnson and head the ball inside the far post.

Early in the second half it was a free kick from Bale which wasn't properly cleared that allowed Vertonghen to net his second goal of the contest.

But a mistake in defense by Tottenham handed Liverpool the equalizer as Kyle Walker and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris misjudged a long ball that allowed Stewart Downing to swoop in and tally the equalizer in the 66th minute.

The winning goal came in the final 10 minutes after Benoit Assou-Ekotto fouled Suarez inside the penalty area, allowing Gerrard to score from the spot to give Liverpool one of its best victories of the season.

Newcastle 2, Stoke City 1

Newcastle, England - Newcastle climbed nine points above the relegation places on Sunday as Papiss Cisse scored in stoppage time to give the Magpies a 2-1 win over Stoke City at St James' Park.

Jonathan Walters handed Stoke City the lead against the run of play in the 67th minute when he drew a foul on Newcastle's Cheick Tiote inside the area and stepped to the spot to fire home the first goal.

But the lead lasted only five minutes as Yohan Cabaye scored on a wonderful free kick that struck the underside of the crossbar before settling over the goal line.

Sylvain Marveaux orchestrated the winning goal in added time when he picked out Cisse in front of goal and the striker easily beat stranded goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.
