UEFA has charged Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson for not attending a mandatory news conference after his team lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League.

UEFA says its disciplinary panel will judge the case on March 21. Fines are usually given for not speaking to the media.

Champions League regulations compel clubs to "make their manager/head coach available" for a UEFA-run news conference within 20 minutes of the final whistle.

Also, UEFA says the panel will consider extending an automatic one-match ban Nani must serve for being shown a red card during Man United's 2-1 loss at Old Trafford on Tuesday. That red card infuriated Ferguson, who sent an assistant to address the media after the game.

Madrid won 3-2 on aggregate to advance to the quarterfinals.
