The Washington Redskins announced on Wednesday that the team has added former San Diego Chargers general manager A.J. Smith to its front office staff.

Smith will hold the title of senior executive and is expected to serve in an advisory role to current GM Bruce Allen.

The 64-year-old Smith helped the Chargers to five AFC West titles during his 10-year run as GM and was named the NFL's Executive of the Year by the Pro Football Writers Association in 2004. However, he was relieved of his duties in January after San Diego failed to qualify for the playoffs for a third straight year this past season.

Smith spent a total of 14 years with the Chargers and owns 28 years of NFL experience, including a stint as the Buffalo Bills' director of pro personnel from 1993-2000.

The Rhode Island native will be joining a Redskins' organization that currently has his son, Kyle, on staff as an area scout.
