Bruins get back to work against Islanders

(SportsNetwork.com) - The Boston Bruins used hard work and a bit of luck to snap their two-game losing streak last time out.

The Bruins try to make it back-to-back wins on Saturday night as they visit the New York Islanders.

Trailing by a goal on Thursday against Anaheim, Zdeno Chara put home a game- tying power-play goal with 2:50 left in regulation and Jarome Iginla scored the lone goal of a shootout to lift Boston to a 3-2 win.

Tuukka Rask made 21 saves through overtime and was not bested by any of the Ducks' three skaters in the tiebreaker thanks to some help.

Iginla scored in the second round and Anaheim's Corey Perry and Carl Soderberg, who scored his first career NHL goal for Boston earlier in the game, traded misses. Ryan Getzlaf then tried to extend the shootout for Anaheim, but his attempt rang off the right post.

That capped a comeback that saw Boston match Anaheim's 23 shots in the game despite having just one in the first period.

"I think we worked hard," Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "I'd rather give my team credit for this one than say we're fortunate."

Boston won for the fifth time in seven games, but did see defenseman Johnny Boychuk exit with an undisclosed injury. He is considered day-to-day.

The Islanders also rallied to snap a two-game slide last time out, overcoming a pair of two-goal deficits in a 5-4 shootout win over Ottawa on Friday night. Frans Nielsen netted the game-tying goal 3:14 into the third period and then scored the lone tally of the tiebreaker.

Evgeni Nabokov sealed the win with a pad save on Bobby Ryan to cap his 27-save night and give New York its third victory in the last 10 games.

The Islanders themselves unleashed a season-high 57 shots on net and also got goals from Pierre-Marc Bouchard, Matt Martin and John Tavares.

"You want to get rewarded when you play well and the guys' work ethic is where it needs to be," Islanders head coach Jack Capuano said. "We were resilient and we battled back."

The Islanders would do well to avoid falling behind to the Bruins, who have won six of eight and nine of the last 12 meetings. They have also won three straight and eight of the last 10 on Long Island.

Rask is 6-2-0 with a 2.23 goals against average in nine meetings with the Islanders, while Nabokov is 5-5-1 with a 2.44 GAA in 11 games versus the Bruins. New York backup Kevin Poulin has never faced them.
