Making his tournament debut, fifth-seeded Jurgen Melzer was sent home early by Joao Sousa of Portugal in opening round action at the $1.213 million Mexican Open tennis event.

Sousa needed 83 minutes to dispose of the Austrian, winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3 on the red clay at the Fairmont Acapulco Princess.

After dropping the first set of his respective match, Spaniard Pablo Andujar moved on in claiming a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory over Serbia's Dusan Lajovic.

In other first round action, Martin Alund of Argentina defeated Mexico's Daniel Garza 7-6 (9-7), 7-5, Colombian Santiago Giraldo took out Spaniard Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 decision and Leonardo Mayer of Argentina ousted Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela in two sets, 6-0, 7-6 (8-6).

This week's top seeds, who all hail from Spain, are last week's Buenos Aires champion David Ferrer, Rafael Nadal and Nicolas Almagro. Ferrer is also the three-time reigning Acapulco titlist. Nadal, who titled in Sao Paulo two weeks ago, titled here in 2005, while Almagro was the Acapulco champ in 2008 and 2009 and runner-up to Ferrer in 2011.

The 2013 Acapulco winner will claim $291,800.
