Indiana nearly a unanimous choice as top-ranked hoops team

New York, NY – Indiana now has a stranglehold as the top men's college basketball team in the nation.

The Hoosiers are nearly a unanimous choice in the latest Associated Press poll, earning all but one of the 65 first-place votes and a total of 1,624 points from a nationwide media panel to outdistance the new No. 2, Gonzaga.

Indiana is at the top for the fourth straight week. The Hoosiers were also ranked No. 1 in the preseason and for the first five regular-season polls.

Gonzaga, meanwhile, received the only other first-place vote and moved up one spot from third after Miami-Florida's loss at Wake Forest on Saturday. The Hurricanes dropped three spots to fifth, behind No. 3 Duke and fourth-ranked Michigan, both of whom moved up three spots.

Kansas, Georgetown, Florida, Michigan State and Louisville complete this week's top 10. Georgetown vaulted four spots from 11th after a 57-46 win at Syracuse on Saturday, while Florida dipped three places from fifth following a loss at Missouri last Tuesday. Michigan State also tumbled five spots from fourth after losses to Indiana and Ohio State last week.

The second 10 consists of Arizona, Syracuse, Kansas State, New Mexico, Oklahoma State, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Saint Louis, Memphis and Butler. Syracuse is out of the top 10 for the first time this season, falling four spots following Saturday's loss to the Hoyas that ended a 38-game winning streak at the Carrier Dome.

Saint Louis is ranked for the first time since a one-week stay last season. The Billikens have won nine straight games, including victories last week over a pair of ranked teams -- VCU and Butler. The Bulldogs dropped five spots from 15th after last Friday's home loss.

Notre Dame, Marquette, Pittsburgh, Oregon and Louisiana Tech are the last five teams ranked. Louisiana Tech, 14-0 in WAC play, is ranked for the first time since the 1984-85 season when a budding superstar named Karl Malone carried the Bulldogs as high as No. 7.

Colorado State and VCU dropped out this week. Colorado State was 22nd before losing to UNLV and New Mexico last week, while VCU's return to the rankings lasted just a week after falling victim to Saint Louis.

This week's schedule is highlighted by Saturday's ACC showdown between Duke and Miami-Florida. This time it's in Durham and the Blue Devils will try to avenge the 90-63 thrashing the Hurricanes put on them back in January.

Also Saturday, Syracuse hosts Louisville and Marquette welcomes Notre Dame, while Sunday's action features Michigan State and Michigan in Ann Arbor with the Wolverines trying to reverse a 75-52 pasting in East Lansing from two weeks ago.
