Detroit, MI – Damien Brunner had two goals and two assists as the Detroit Red Wings took an 8-3 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday.
Joakim Andersson had two goals while Henrik Zetterberg and Niklas Kronwall each posted a goal and two assists for the Red Wings, who set a season-high in goals in winning their second straight. Jimmy Howard posted 18 saves in the win.
"It's nice to get these two wins after losing five straight," said Brunner. "We came out strong and everyone gave their best tonight. It's just about putting hard work in and you'll get paid off."
Daniel Sedin scored twice while Chris Higgins had the other goal for the Canucks, who had a two-game winning streak snapped.
Roberto Luongo was in net for the whole game and he allowed all eight goals on 28 shots.
Vancouver struck just 5:45 into the game when Henrik Sedin worked the puck behind the net and sent a backhand pass from the left side to the slot where his brother one-timed it home.
Detroit, though, got the next two goals as Jordin Tootoo tied the game at the 11:08 mark when he skated down the right wing and tried to pass the puck to the other side, but it hit off of Keith Ballard and got past Luongo. Just 1:29 later, Kronwall's slap shot from the high slot hit off a defender's stick and snuck in for a 2-1 lead.
The Canucks answered less than four minutes later as the Sedin brothers again hooked up. Henrik fired a hard dump in from the neutral zone that took a perfect hop off the back boards and on to the stick of Daniel, who was behind the defense and lifted it past a surprised Howard.
It was a 3-2 game in favor of Vancouver just over two minutes later when Higgins' backhanded wraparound from the left side hit off the far right post and went in.
Detroit, though, dominated the second period with three power-play goals and held a 5-3 lead after 40 minutes of play.
The first goal came at the 2:57 mark as Brunner sent a backhand pass from the inside right circle to the low left side where Daniel Cleary redirected it in to tie the game.
Detroit then took the lead for good with 4:50 to play in the second. Zetterberg sent a pass from the right point to the right circle for Pavel Datsyuk, who circled around and then fed it back to the slot where Zetterberg re-directed it in.
It was then a 5-3 contest with 41.4 seconds left in the second as a Kronwall right point shot was blocked by a defender, but Brunner gathered the loose puck and snapped it home from the right side.
Near the midway mark of the third period, Brunner gathered a loose puck along the right boards and sent a quick shot on net that knuckle balled past Luongo for a 6-3 advantage.
Anderson scored a pair of goals separated by 52 seconds late in the game to account for the final score.
