The opening round of the Match Play Championship was stopped Wednesday by the strangest of elements in golf. It was snowing.

A cold, cloudy morning gave way to rain that came down sideways, and then snow that stuck on the putting surfaces long enough to stop play. Ten matches had not begun.

It was the second time in three years at Dove Mountain that wintry weather led to a delay. Snow fell overnight for the championship match in 2011 between Martin Kaymer and Luke Donald, and while it cleared away when the match began, there was a short delay when sleet covered the golf course.

This is the latest weather incident on the PGA Tour this year, following high wind on Maui and fog at Torrey Pines.
