Bogota, Colombia – Second seed Alize Cornet was among Monday's opening-round winners at the Copa Claro Colsanitas tennis event.
The French Cornet got past Ukrainian Elina Svitolina 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) on the red clay at Centro de Alto Rendimiento.
Also on Day 1, France's Mathilde Johansson edged out Canadian Stephanie Dubois 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, Argentine Paula Ormaechea handled Russian Nina Bratchikova 7-5, 6-2 and Luxembourg's Mandy Minella mauled German Tatjana Malek 6-4, 6-3. Johansson was a runner-up here in 2011.
This week's top seed is former world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic.
Spaniard Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino defeated Russian Alexandra Panova in last year's finale.
The 2013 Bogota champion will earn $40,000.
