Celtic's hopes of advancing beyond the Round of 16 of the Champions League took a major hit on Tuesday as the Hoops fell at Celtic Park in a 3-0 loss to Juventus.

The Italian giants are well-positioned to advance to the quarterfinals as goals from Alessandro Matri, Claudio Marchisio and Mirko Vucinic guided the Old Lady to a three-score advantage and a major edge in the away goals department.

Celtic nearly opened the scoring early on when Victor Wanyama's shot from distance forced a brilliant save out of Gianluigi Buffon. Replays showed that the shot appeared to be heading wide, but the Italian took no chances in parrying the ball to safety.

The Hoops were left to rue that miss as Juventus got off the mark shortly after.

Efe Ambrose was muscled off of an aerial ball played over the top by Matri, who clipped the delivery past an on-rushing Fraser Forster. The ball appeared to have crossed the goal line before being cleared with a sliding effort, but Marchisio made sure when followed up the rebound with a thumping effort from close range. Credit for the goal was eventually awarded to Matri.

Celtic created a few half-chances during the remainder of the first half, but Juventus staved off the pressure to make it to the break with its one-goal lead in tact.

The home side nearly leveled the score just after the hour mark when an unmarked Ambrose rose high to meet a curling cross, but he directed his header directly at Buffon as the Italian stalwart collected the attempt with ease.

Juventus then seized control of the match as the Serie A outfit scored twice in the final 13 minutes to wrap up the affair.

Matri turned provider when he played Marchisio in on goal. The 27-year-old cut inside before firing a shot back across to the near post to beat the wrong- footed Forster.

Juventus put the result on ice seven minutes from time, capitalizing on a giveaway from the Celtic defense. Wanyama was dispossessed just outside the box and Marchisio slipped a pass in the path of Vucinic, who fired a low shot past Forster at the far post to seal the emphatic win.

With the Italian side heading home with a three-goal aggregate edge, Celtic must score at least four goals at Juventus Stadium on March 6 to have a chance of advancing.

PSG 2, Valencia 1

Valencia, Spain - Valencia opened its Round of 16 Champions League tie with a 2-1 loss to PSG at the Mestalla on Tuesday, but the La Liga side received a couple of lifelines late in the match that bode well for the second leg.

PSG had the first quality chance when Lucas Moura unleashed a rocket from outside the box, but the Brazilian's effort rattled off the base of the post.

Less than a minute later, the visitors finally broke through. Ezequiel Lavezzi worked a nifty give-and-go with Javier Pastore and fired a powerful shot past Vicente Guaita, leaving the Valencia 'keeper with no chance at a reaction save.

PSG's advantage was doubled just before the halftime break when Moura's low cross to the penalty mark was met by Pastore, who sent his one-time effort between the legs of Guaita.

Valencia was able to pull one back in the 90th minute when Adil Rami flicked a set-piece delivery past Salvatore Sirigu, cutting PSG's aggregate lead in half.

Making matters worse for the French club, Zlatan Ibrahimovic saw red in stoppage time for a rash, over-the-top challenge.

As a result, PSG will look to preserve its one-goal advantage in the return leg at the Parc des Princes on March 6 without its highest-scoring player this term.
