Augustine Rubit scored 18 points, including the go-ahead tip-in with 35 seconds left to lift South Alabama past Florida Atlantic 72-71 in a Sun Belt Conference showdown Saturday night.

Antoine Allen and Mychal Ammons scored 13 points apiece to help South Alabama (14-9, 11-4) win its third consecutive game.

There were 12 ties and 12 lead changes in the contest.

Down 70-69, Jordan McCoy made two free throws with 1:02 left to give Florida Atlantic a 71-70 lead.

On the next possession, Rubit missed a layup but got his own rebound and converted the tip-in to recapture the lead 72-71 with 35 seconds to go.

The Owls (11-15, 6-9) had a chance to win it late, but with .6 seconds remaining and down by 1, Greg Gantt turned the ball over.

Grantt, despite the miscue, finished with a game-high 23 points for Florida Atlantic.
