Two-time champion Marin Cilic eased into the quarterfinals, while former titlist Marcos Baghdatis was a second- round upset victim Thursday at the Zagreb Indoors tennis event.
The top-seeded Croatian crowd favorite Cilic leveled Slovenian Grega Zemlja 6-2, 6-3.
The Zagreb resident Cilic, who titled here back-to-back in 2009 and 2010, will face another Slovenian in Blaz Kavcic on Friday.
Kavcic ousted the sixth-seeded Cypriot Baghdatis 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 at Dom Sportova. The former Australian Open runner-up Baghdatis captured this Zagreb tournament in 2007.
Another upset came when capable Dutchman Robin Haase doused fifth-seeded Slovak Martin Klizan 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Meanwhile, fourth-seeded Austrian left-hander Jurgen Melzer avoided the upset bug by coming from behind to best Indian Somdev Devvarman 1-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.
Up next for Melzer will be big-serving Czech Lukas Rosol, who snuck past Italian Flavio Cipolla 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.
Also on Day 3, an all-Croatian affair saw Ivan Dodig outlast 6-foot-10 compatriot Ivo Karlovic 7-6 (7-2), 6-7 (2-7), 6-3 and German qualifier Philipp Petzschner dismiss Croatian lucky-loser Dino Marcan 6-3, 6-4, as Marcan replaced ill second seed Andreas Seppi of Italy in the draw. The massive- serving Karlovic launched 22 aces past the 2011 Zagreb champion Dodig, but Dodig broke Karlovic twice, while Karlovic settled for only one break in defeat.
Dodig will face third-seeded reigning champion Mikhail Youzhny in battle of Zagreb champs on Friday, while Petzschner will meet Haase in the quarterfinals.
