Palermo has replaced sacked manager Gian Piero Gasperini with Alberto Malesani, it was announced Tuesday.

Gasperini was relieved of his coaching duties on Monday, and club officials wasted no time in naming his successor.

Malesani, who has formerly managed Genoa, Bologna and Siena, has been entrusted with keeping Palermo in Serie A for another season. The club sank to the bottom of Italy's top flight with a loss to Atalanta at the weekend.

"Palermo have entrusted the care of the first team to Alberto Malesani," read a statement on the club's website Tuesday. "The 59-year-old coach is taking his first training session now and will be presented at Boccadifalco tomorrow morning."
