Julian Knowle and Alexander Peya kept Austria alive in its opening round Davis Cup tie against Kazakhstan with a dominant doubles victory on Saturday.

Knowle and Peya earned a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) triumph over the Kazakh duo of Andrey Golubev and Yuriy Schukin to stave off elimination after Kazakhstan had opened a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five matchup with a pair of singles wins on Friday.

Golubev had beaten Andreas Haider-Maurer in Friday's opening match before Evgeny Korolev made it a sweep with a convincing victory over Jurgen Melzer.

On Sunday, Golubev will have the first opportunity to send Kazakhstan into the quarterfinals when he faces Melzer. The fifth rubber is currently scheduled to pit Korolev against Haider-Maurer.

This is the first-ever meeting between the two nations in Davis Cup play. The winner will move on to face either the Czech Republic or Switzerland in the quarterfinals.
