Wigan confirmed Thursday that it has landed Paul Scharner on a loan deal from Hamburg for the remainder of the season.
Scharner spent more than four years with Wigan before departing for West Bromwich in the summer of 2010. He played out a two-year contract with the Baggies before joining Bundesliga club Hamburg last summer.
"It really is fantastic to be back," said 32-year-old Scharner. "Wigan will always have a big place in my heart, so to be asked to come back and help the team now is something really special for me."
Scharner can operate in midfield or defense, but Wigan manager Roberto Martinez looks set to use the Austrian in defense with the likes of Ivan Ramis and Antolin Alcatraz unavailable through injury.
