Paris, France – Last year's French Open runner-up Sara Errani posted a match win at another Parisian tennis tournament on Thursday, as the Italian star reached the quarterfinals at the GDF Suez Open.
The top-seeded Italian was leading Magdalena Rybarikova 4-0 in the first set of their second-round match on Day 4 when the Slovakian qualifier retired due to a stomach virus at Stade Coubertin.
Errani's quarterfinal opponent on Friday will be capable Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro.
In other second-round action involving seeds, Dutch lucky-loser Kiki Bertens ousted No. 4 Slovak Dominika Cibulkova 7-5, 6-4, No. 6 Czech Lucie Safarova held off Frenchwoman Alize Cornet 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 and Suarez Navarro toppled No. 8 Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-3. Safarova was the runner-up at this event in 2007 and 2010.
One other match saw French wild card Kristina Mladenovic dismiss Belgian Yanina Wickmayer 6-4, 6-4. Mladenovic is rewarded with a quarterfinal against second-seeded former Wimbledon champion and 2011 GDF Suez titlist Petra Kvitova.
Also on Friday, third-seeded French star Marion Bartoli will meet German Mona Barthel and Safarova will encounter Bertens. The former Wimbledon runner-up Bartoli lost to German Angelique Kerber in last year's finale in Paris.
The winner of this $690,000 event will collect $125,000.
