Raphael Varane's goal in the 81st minute salvaged a 1-1 draw for Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semifinal against Barcelona.

The Catalans enjoyed the majority of the possession and took the lead in the 50th minute when Lionel Messi intercepted an attempted clearance and slid the ball to Fabregas, who beat goalkeeper Diego Lopez.

Madrid was fortunate to remain within a goal as the match entered the final 10 minutes, and Varane helped the home side snatch a draw nine minutes from time with a well-placed header.

The two sides will meet up at the Camp Nou on Feb. 27 for the second leg.
