Pattaya City, Thailand – Third seed Su-Wei Hsieh came up an opening-round loser Monday at the $235,000 Pattaya Open tennis event.
New Zealand's Marina Erakovic whipped Taipei's Hsieh 6-2, 6-2 on the hardcourts at Dusit Thani Hotel.
Also on Day 1, Thai wild card Varatchaya Wongteanchai handled German Annika Beck 6-3, 6-3, Russian Alexandra Panova topped Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu 7-6 (8-6), 3-2, retired, and France's Mathilde Johansson dismissed Taipei's Kai- Chen Chang 6-4, 6-3.
This week's top seed is former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic. The Serbian star will open her stay against Japan's Ayumi Morita on Tuesday.
Reigning two-time champion Daniela Hantuchova, seeded sixth this week, bested Russian Maria Kirilenko, this week's second seed, in last year's Pattaya finale. Hantuchova and Kirilenko are also on Tuesday's schedule.
This week's winner will collect $40,000.
