Lyon back on top of Ligue 1

Lyon moved three points clear at the top of Ligue 1 on Friday with a 2-0 win over Valenciennes at the Stade du Hainaut.

Gueida Fofana got the visitors off on the right foot just eight minutes into the contest when he blasted a superb right-footed strike into the bottom-right corner from outside the box for the 1-0 advantage.

Just 20 minutes later, Bafetimbi Gomis made it two for the traveling side when he took a pass from Alexandre Lacazette and ripped a rising shot into the top- right corner of the net for his 12th goal in league play this term, leaving Valenciennes goalkeeper Nicolas Penneteau with little chance for a save.

Valenciennes had a golden opportunity to pull one back 18 minutes from time when Anthony Le Tallec got his head to a corner kick from Maor Melikson in the penalty area, but the shot sailed over the bar.

Lyon goalkeeper Remi Vercoutre needed to make just three saves in the victory, which leaves the hosts in 11th place on 30 points from 22 matches.

Third-placed Marseille highlights Saturday's matches as it travels to the Stade de le Route-de-Lorient to face Rennes in search of a second consecutive league win. Rennes, meanwhile, will take the pitch without midfielder Yann M'Vila, who completed a move to Russian Premier League side Rubin Kazan earlier in the week.

Coming off a thrilling 3-2 win over Troyes last week, Lorient will attempt to move up the table on Saturday when it takes on Nancy at the Stade Marcel Picot, while a win for Nancy would lift the club off the bottom of the standings.

Also on Saturday, Ajaccio battles Evian, which is just one point clear of the drop zone, while defending league champions Montpellier will be looking to snap a three-game slide in all competitions when it takes on 15th-placed Sochaux. Reims hosts Toulouse, which lost midfielder Moussa Sissoko to Newcastle United on Friday, while Troyes welcomes Brest to the Stade de l`Aube.

On Sunday, Paris Saint-Germain will take on Lille at the Parc des Princes looking to extend its unbeaten run in league play to nine straight games, while St. Etienne hosts Bastia hoping to extend its own unbeaten run to three consecutive games.

Bordeaux travels to Nice looking to rebound from a 1-0 defeat to PSG last week, but will do so without striker Yoan Gouffran, who completed a switch to Newcastle United on Wednesday.
