Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas is facing a long spell on the sidelines after he fractured a bone in his hand during the club's Copa del Rey quarterfinal against Valencia on Wednesday.

Casillas sustained the blow after 18 minutes when he took a kick to the hand. The injury will open the door for Antonio Adan to deputize.

"After carrying out initial x-rays at the La Moraleja Sanitas Hospital, it has been confirmed that the footballer Iker Casillas has suffered a fracture at the base of the first metacarpal on his left hand," read a statement released by Real Madrid. "It will be assessed again by a specialist later today to decide what treatment will be followed."

The match finished in a 1-1 draw, enough to see Real Madrid advance to the semifinals.
