The top-seeded doubles team of Italy's Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci upended the 12th-seeded tandem of Serena Williams and Venus Williams in the quarterfinals Tuesday at the Australian Open.

The match at Margaret Court Arena lasted 2 hours, 36 minutes and saw the Italian duo pull out a 3-6, 7-6 (7-1), 7-5 victory over the powerful Americans, who were vying for their 14th Grand Slam doubles title together.

Serena, who will play her singles quarterfinal against fellow American Sloane Stephens on Wednesday, had her serve broken to go down 4-5 in the third set, but the Williams' broke right back to tie the match.

Venus double-faulted on break point to give Errani a chance to serve out the match, and she did just that to reach the semis, where the Italians will face an unseeded Russian duo of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina.

The Williams sisters own four Aussie Open doubles titles, with the last one coming in 2010.

Errani and Vinci are the reigning U.S. and French Open champions and were last year's Aussie Open runners-up.
