Former University of Delaware assistant head coach and linebackers coach Brad Sherrod was named Elon University's new defensive coordinator on Tuesday.

In Sherrod's first season at Delaware in 2010, the Blue Hens posted a 12-3 record while reaching the NCAA Division I Football Championship Game. He has 18 years of collegiate coaching experience, including at Western Carolina, Massachusetts, East Tennessee State and Duke, his alma mater.

"Brad is a good fit for Elon," Elon coach Jason Swepson said. "Being a Duke graduate, Brad understands the importance of academics at a school like Elon. He played at a high level and was highly recommended by many different people. His defense is a 4-3 scheme that features penetration with the defensive line and quarters coverage. I think his style will be a great fit for our veteran defense."

Elon finished with a 3-8 record, including 1-7 in the Southern Conference, this past season.
