Atletico Madrid's title challenge took a hit over the weekend as striker Radamel Falcao sustained a leg injury that is expected to keep him out of action for three weeks.

Falcao pulled up with the injury in the 57th minute of his team's 2-0 win over Levante on Sunday as he sprinted for a ball and asked to be substituted.

Atletico manager Diego Simeone revealed that the exact nature of the injury is still unknown, but he expects the Colombia international to spend the next three weeks out of action in order to rest.

The win over Levante helped Atletico move to within eight points of leaders Barcelona, which lost for the first time this season on Saturday against Real Sociedad.

Falcao leads Atletico with 18 goals in 18 La Liga games this season, while the next highest scorers on the club are Arda Turan and Raul Garcia with four goals apiece.
