Davide Ballardini has been appointed Genoa's third manager of the season, following Luigi Del Neri's dismissal on Sunday.
Ballardini succeeds Del Neri and Luigi De Canio, who was sacked just eight matches into the current campaign.
The 49-year-old managed the Rossoblu between November 2010 and June 2011 and returns to the club after a 2-0 home defeat to Catania on Sunday put an end to Del Neri's term as manager.
"Genoa announces that it has entrusted the management of the first team to coach Davide Ballardini, who led the team in the 2010-11 season," the club said in a statement.
Del Neri, the former Juventus manager, was appointed on October 22, but a run of nine losses from 13 matches saw the club glued to the bottom three in the Serie A table.
The Rossoblu sit in 18th place, three points from safety, and face a daunting task on the weekend when they travel to Turin to face league leaders Juventus.
