Atletico Madrid closes gap on Barcelona

Madrid, Spain - (Sports Network) - Atletico Madrid closed to within eight points of league leaders Barcelona on Sunday, claiming a 2-0 win over Levante at the Vicente Calderon.

The home side struck first in the 32nd minute when Manquillo played a square ball in the box for Adrian to tap home.

A bit of misfortune hit Atletico eight minutes after the break when Radamel Falcao pulled up lame while charging down the left wing and needed to be substituted because of injury.

But Atletico shook off the injury to its star forward and added a second goal on the hour mark courtesy of beautiful, curling right-footed strike into the top corner by Koke for the comfortable 2-0 margin.

Atletico has not allowed a goal at home over the past 947 minutes of action and pushed its unbeaten streak in league play to four straight games, while Levante retains its spot in La Liga on 30 points.

Ronaldo struck again four minutes before the break after corralling a pass from Mesut Ozil and cracking it first-time into the net. Di Maria got his second of the game on the stroke of halftime, easing one past Valencia keeper Diego Alves.

Valencia upped the pressure in the second half, but was unable to find a goal as Los Che remain in seventh place with 30 points from 20 matches.
