Russian Ekaterina Makarova gained her second straight Australian Open quarterfinal berth by disposing of fifth- seeded German Angelique Kerber, 7-5, 6-4 on Sunday.

The 19th-seeded Makarova, whose best Grand Slam result came a year ago at Melbourne Park, overcame 29 unforced errors and five double faults. Next up for Makarova will be either second-seeded Maria Sharapova or Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens.

Last year Makarova lost to Sharapova in straight sets in the quarterfinals.

Also Sunday, fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska takes her perfect 2013 record into Rod Laver Arena against former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic, while sixth-seeded Li Na faces Julia Goerges.
