Davante Gardner scored a game-high 17 points to go along with five rebounds, as No. 25 Marquette downed Seton Hall, 69-62, in a conference clash at the Bradley Center.
Todd Mayo added 12 points and Vander Blue chipped in with 11 for the Golden Eagles (13-3, 4-0 Big East), who continued to play stout defense and fundamentally-sound offense in their sixth straight win.
"I think our guys are much more aware of time, score and momentum now," said Marquette coach Buzz Williams. "I think we have been really good at playing to the scouting report over the last four games."
Aaron Cosby led Seton Hall (12-6, 1-4) with 15 points and Haralds Karlis added 14 points and six rebounds in the loss. Fuquan Edwin donated 12 points and Eugene Teague corralled 11 rebounds for the Pirates, who have dropped four straight.
Marquette methodically opened a 9-2 lead just over six minutes in on Trent Lockett's slam in transition, as Seton Hall managed just two field goals in the first 6 1/2 minutes. The Pirates settled down and pulled within 13-12 on Karlis' 3-pointer with about eight minutes on the clock, but six quick points from the Golden Eagles advanced the margin to seven.
Seton Hall didn't make a field goal after Karlis' triple and saw itself in a 26-16 halftime hole after Blue's 3-pointer in the closing seconds.
The Pirates clawed within 28-24 on Karlis' layup with just over four minutes gone in the second half and got even closer at 40-39 after two Karlis free throws. Marquette again struck back, pushing the margin to 49-41 on Mayo's 3- pointer.
The teams continued to trade long-range punches as Edwin's trey brought the Pirates within 53-48, but that's as close as they came. Marquette extended the lead out to 11 then held on down the stretch.
Marquette made 43.5 percent of its shots and held TCU to 39.6 percent shooting ... Jamil Wilson scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds in the victory ... Marquette leads the all-time series, 10-2 ... Seton Hall scored 46 second-half points after managing just 16 in the first half.
