Wigan confirmed Tuesday that defender Ivan Ramis will miss the remainder of the season with a cruciate ligament injury sustained in the club's draw at Fulham on Saturday.

"Nothing can disguise the fact this is a massive blow because Ivan is a key member of the group but we are relieved that the injury is not a severe as we feared it could have been," Wigan manager Roberto Martinez told the club's official website.

Wigan's defense now looks quite thin with Antolin Alcaraz still absent from a groin injury suffered in August.

"The most important thing now is to think of Ivan's welfare, get the operation completed, and for him to begin his rehabilitation," Martinez continued. "Ivan is a very strong and positive character and he is determined to return to fitness as soon as he can. He will receive the best possible medical rehabilitation as the club ensures to have him return as an even stronger footballer."

Ramis, 28, joined Wigan in the summer from Spanish side Mallorca. He has made 19 appearances for the Latics this season and only recently returned to action from a hamstring problem.
