Utah State didn't look far to find Gary Andersen's replacement, as the university tabbed offensive coordinator and alum Matt Wells as the Aggies' next head football coach.

Wells, a former Aggie quarterback from 1994-96, was an assistant under Andersen the past two years and helped guide Utah State to an 11-2 record this past season, including a victory in the Idaho Potato Bowl last Saturday.

Andersen officially took over the reins at Wisconsin on Thursday.

"I'm extremely honored and humbled to be the next head football coach at my alma mater," said Wells. "This is a university that molded me as a student- athlete and I am fully invested and passionate about continuing the vision for this football program that was set before me."

This year's Utah State team set single-season school records for total points (454), total offense (6,108), completions (285) and total yards per game (469.8).

Since 1997, Wells has served as an assistant coach at Navy, Tulsa, New Mexico and Louisville.
