Gelsenkirchen, Germany – Schalke midfielder Jermaine Jones was hit with a four-match suspension on Wednesday after being sent off in his team's 3-1 defeat to Stuttgart last weekend.
The American international picked up a second yellow card in the 73rd minute of Saturday's defeat for a poor challenge on Stuttgart's Ibrahima Traore.
The German Football Federation decided to hand down a harsh punishment in this case because Jones is a repeat offender, having been sent off five times for Schalke.
Jones has started 13 of Schalke's 16 games in the Bundesliga this season, but the ban will force him to miss upcoming matches with Freiburg, Hannover, Augsburg and Greuther Furth.
