Corinthians reaches Club World Cup final

Brazilian side Corinthians advanced to the final of the FIFA Club World Cup on Wednesday as a first-half goal from Paolo Guerrero was enough to give the South American champions a 1-0 win over Egypt's Al Ahly.

The only goal in the semifinal arrived on the half-hour mark when Douglas delivered a cross into the area that allowed Guerrero to get up above his defender and head the ball past goalkeeper Sherif Ekramy.

Al Ahly tried to respond after halftime but the best chance fell to substitute Mohamed Aboutrika, whose long-range effort managed to sail narrowly wide of the net with 20 minutes to play.

Walid Soliman also had a look at goal five minutes from time for Al Ahly, yet he too failed to hit the target as the ball was driven over the crossbar.

Corinthians captured the title in 2000 and will face the winner of Thursday's other semifinal between Monterrey and Chelsea.

In the match to determine fifth place, Hiroshima topped Asian champion Ulsan Hyundai, 3-2, behind two second-half goals from Hisato Sato.
