Ligue 1 leaders Lyon needed a goal from Michel Bastos in the 83rd minute to salvage a 1-1 draw with relegation-battling Nancy on Wednesday at the Stade de Gerland.
The hosts had won their last three games to move to the top of Ligue 1, while Nancy entered the contest on the bottom of the pile having recorded just one win all season.
But despite such a large disparity in the table it was Nancy that struck first in the 74th minute when Salif Sane's header was saved by goalkeeper Remi Vercoutre, leaving a close-range rebound for Jordan Loties to finish off.
Nancy's lead lasted only nine minutes, however, as the club had to settle for its fifth successive draw when Bastos combined with Steed Malbranque before drilling a 20-yard shot past goalkeeper Damien Gregorini.
Marseille 2, Bastia 1
Furiani, France - Marseille closed to within three points of the Ligue 1 summit on Wednesday after earning a 2-1 win at Bastia.
It took Marseille only 15 minutes to jump in front as Rod Fanni's headed pass found the right foot of Mathieu Valbuena, who smacked his shot past goalkeeper Landry Bonnefoi and into the upper left corner of the net.
The visitors doubled their advantage 20 minutes from time when Bonnefoi brought down Marseille's Jordan Ayew inside the penalty area.
Andre Ayew then stepped up and drove the spot kick inside the right post, leaving Bastia two goals down.
A response came in the 82nd minute from Bastia as Anthony Modeste latched on to a through ball from Jerome Rothen to notch his seventh goal of the season. But there was to be no late heroics from the home side and the loss leaves them in 15th place.
Ajaccio 2, Reims 0
Ajaccio, France - Reims saw its winless streak reach nine games on Wednesday after the club sustained a 2-0 defeat at Ajaccio.
The home side entered the match on a winless run of its own, having failed to take three points from any of its last four matches.
But Ajaccio climbed three points clear of the drop zone on Wednesday after taking a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute through a well-taken free kick from Adrian Mutu.
The lead remained 1-0 until the 77th minute, when Reims defender Mickael Tacalfred scored an own goal, leaving his team only one point clear of the bottom three.
Montpellier 2, Brest 1
Brest, France - Montpellier overcame an early goal to record a 2-1 away win against Brest on Wednesday, giving the defending Ligue 1 champions their sixth win of the campaign.
Eden Ben Basat tallied the opening goal after 14 minutes to put Brest on top, only for defender Johan Martial to give the opener back seven minutes later with an own goal.
Montpellier may not be in title contention this season, but the club climbed seven points above the relegation places on Wednesday after John Utaka's 57th- minute goal, which came after a nice through ball from Younes Belhanda.
Evian 2, Troyes 0
Annecy, France - A goal in each half from Cedric Barbosa was enough for Evian to inflict even more damage to the survival hopes of Troyes, which sustained a 2-0 defeat on Wednesday to remain rooted to the foot of the Ligue 1 table.
Both clubs started the day in the bottom three, but Barbosa's goals move Evian three points clear of the drop zone, while Troyes is winless in its last eight matches and is eight points adrift of a place outside the bottom three.
Evian controlled the play throughout much of the match and went in front after 30 minutes when Kevin Berigaud's cross was volleyed home by Barbosa.
Troyes goalkeeper Yohann Thuram kept his side in the match, but he couldn't prevent a second goal after the break when he stopped a shot from Saber Khelifa, only for Barbosa to score on the rebound.
Lorient 2, Sochaux 0
Lorient, France - Lorient's good run of form continued on Wednesday with a 2-0 home win against Sochaux, giving the club four wins from its last five games to climb into the top four.
The hosts seized the advantage shortly before halftime when Alain Traore unleashed a rocket from outside the penalty area that found the upper left corner of the net.
Lorient doubled its lead eight minutes into the second half from a corner kick as Lamine Kone drove the ball inside the left post from the middle of the area.
Sochaux's defeat drops the club into the bottom three, one point from safety.
