U.S. ends 2012 on top of FIFA women's rankings

The United States women's national team finished 2012 in the top spot in the FIFA women's world rankings, keeping a bit of distance between themselves and second-place Germany.

The U.S. women captured the gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, and the team is in the midst of a 20-match unbeaten streak that includes a pair of draws with the Germans in October friendlies.

Japan, Brazil and France make up the rest of the top five respectively, while the lone change in the top 10 saw Italy drop to 11th, while Korea DPR moved into a tie with Australia for ninth.

The biggest drop among teams in the top 50 belongs to Nigeria, which fell five places to 32nd, while Austria made the biggest improvement by moving up three spots to join Nigeria in 32nd.

The next edition of the FIFA women's world rankings will be released on March 22, 2013.
