For a second straight day, the start of the inaugural Nelson Mandela Championship was postponed Friday due to rain and waterlogged course conditions.
The first round at Royal Durban has been pushed to Saturday. In the last two months, Durban has had rainfall equal to the annual precipitation and more rain early Friday caused widespread flooding across the course.
"The further overnight rain - around 30mm - and a huge thunderstorm has obviously set us back by a long way now. Every fairway is almost completely under water now and there is no chance we will be able to play at all on Friday," said European Tour Tournament Director Mikael Eriksson said.
"The plan now is to try to start the first round at 6:30 on Saturday morning; we are hiring more pumps and more people to try to clear the water off the golf course as fast as possible."
This is the first tournament of the 2012-13 European Tour season. Branden Grace, who won four European Tour events in 2012, headlines the field.
