Sunderland captain Lee Cattermole has been ruled out for two months because of a knee injury, the club revealed on Friday.
Cattermole suffered the injury in Sunderland's 0-0 draw with QPR last month, and after seeing a specialist, it was confirmed that he will likely be out until February.
"He'll probably be about another two months," Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill said.
"I knew the news wouldn't be too good. It could have been worse but obviously it could have been better."
Cattermole has started nine games in the Premiership this season, but the latest setback will force him to miss up to 12 league games.
