ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis beat Valparaiso 62-49 on Sunday in its first game since former coach Rick Majerus died of heart failure.
Majerus, 64, passed away at a Los Angeles hospital on Saturday. He guided the Billikens to their first NCAA tournament appearance in 12 years last season.
Majerus, who had a history of heart problems, took a leave of absence due to health issues in August. The school announced last month that he would not return.
Dwayne Evans scored 17 points as Saint Louis (4-3) bounced back from a 66-61 loss at Washington on Wednesday. Jordair Jett added 14 points, and Mike McCall Jr. scored 10.
The Billikens used a 10-0 run late in the first half to go up 25-19. Evans ended the blitz with a dunk.
Ryan Broekhoff, Kevin Van Wijk and Matt Kenney had 10 points apiece for Valparaiso (5-2).
