Real topples Atletico in Madrid derby

Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Mesut Ozil secured a 2-0 derby win for Real Madrid over Atletico Madrid, closing the gap between the rivals to five points.

Ronaldo provided the lone bright spot in an otherwise forgettable first half when he lifted a brilliant free kick over the wall that dipped underneath the crossbar for a sensational opener in the 16th minute.

Real was clearly on top as the second half wore on and Ozil added a second goal in the 66th minute when he brought down a pass from Ronaldo inside the area and drove the ball between the legs of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

The final margin could have been more but Ronaldo was twice denied by the woodwork, with the first chance coming on another fierce free kick that hit the crossbar before Ozil played the Portugal international into the area with a well-weighted ball that saw Ronaldo round the goalkeeper and hit the post.

The defeat drops Atletico six points back of leaders Barcelona, while Real remains in third place.

Barcelona 5, Athletic Bilbao 1

Barcelona, Spain - Barcelona coasted to a seventh straight win on Saturday as Lionel Messi scored a pair of goals to lead the Catalan side to a 5-1 win at the Camp Nou.

Gerard Pique's first goal of the season midway through the opening half put Barca in front, while Messi added a second goal three minutes later on a deflected shot.

Adriano scored in first-half stoppage time to cap a fantastic build up that put Barcelona in a comfortable spot before Cesc Fabregas was set up for a goal of his own by Andres Iniesta.

Ibai Gomez pulled a goal back for the visitors in the 65th, but Messi provided a fitting end to the contest five minutes later with a right-footed shot from inside the area that settled into the upper corner of the net.

Getafe 1, Malaga 0

Getafe, Spain - Getafe won its third successive game on Saturday as Alberto Lopo's second-half goal was enough for a 1-0 home win over Malaga.

Lopo brought the game to life in the 56th minute when he slipped between a pair of defenders to head home Pedro Leon's corner kick.

Malaga entered the match with one win from its last five games but the visitors should have equalized when Roque Santa Cruz fired over the net from close range.

The visitors also had a great chance kept out by goalkeeper Miguel Moya, who tipped a shot from Javier Saviola onto the crossbar 12 minutes from time.

Real Sociedad 5, Valencia 2

Valencia, Spain - Real Sociedad moved into seventh place with a 5-2 victory over 10-man Valencia at the Mestalla as the visitors netted four second-half goals.

Roberto Soldado's second-minute tally got Valencia off to a flying start, but a straight red card for Jonas before halftime shifted the tide of the match and Alberto de la Bella equalized in the 43rd minute.

Sociedad then took control in the second half as Mikel Gonzalez put the visitors into the lead with a header from Xabi Prieto's flick, while Diego Ifran added a third goal eight minutes later.

Soldado managed to pull a goal back for Valencia in the 73rd, but Imanol Agirretxe and Carlos Vela scored in the last 10 minutes for Sociedad to make the result comfortable.
