Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Mesut Ozil secured a 2-0 derby win for Real Madrid over Atletico Madrid, closing the gap between the rivals to five points.
Ronaldo provided the lone bright spot in an otherwise forgettable first half when he lifted a brilliant free kick over the wall that dipped underneath the crossbar for a sensational opener in the 16th minute.
Real was clearly on top as the second half wore on and Ozil added a second goal in the 66th minute when he brought down a pass from Ronaldo inside the area and drove the ball between the legs of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
The final margin could have been more but Ronaldo was twice denied by the woodwork, with the first chance coming on another fierce free kick that hit the crossbar before Ozil played the Portugal international into the area with a well-weighted ball that saw Ronaldo round the goalkeeper and hit the post.
The defeat drops Atletico six points back of leaders Barcelona, while Real remains in third place.
