Bayern Munich moved 10 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga on Wednesday after securing a 2-0 win at Freiburg.

A 12th-minute penalty kick from Thomas Muller put Bayern in front, and the hosts were reduced to 10 men a few minutes later as defender Fallou Diagne was sent off.

Anatoliy Tymoshchuk applied the final blow in the 79th minute to make the points safe for Bayern, which is 10 points up on Bayer Leverkusen and 11 clear of defending champions Borussia Dortmund, who Bayern will host on Saturday.

Freiburg entered the contest on a four-match unbeaten run, but Oliver Sorg was called for a handball inside his own area after 12 minutes, allowing Muller to fire Bayern ahead from the spot.

Diagne was sent off in the 18th minute for a professional foul on Bayern's Xherdan Shaqiri, and although the home side did well to hold out for much of the match, Tymoshchuk put the result beyond reach by tracking down a long ball from Philipp Lahm and rounding the goalkeeper before rolling the ball into the empty net.

Monchengladbach 2, Wolfsburg 0

Monchengladbach, Germany - Wolfsburg's recent surge in form was halted on Wednesday at Monchengladbach as the home side scored twice in the first half of a 2-0 victory.

Having taken seven of nine points from its last three games, Wolfsburg moved three points above the drop zone.

But that momentum came to an end as Juan Arango tallied a goal after 11 minutes for Monchengladbach with a well-struck volley before Tony Jantschke scored from close range shortly before halftime.

The best chance for Wolfsburg came after the break when Bas Dost struck the outside of the post.

Stuttgart 2, Augsburg 1

Stuttgart, Germany - Augsburg remained rooted to the bottom of the Bundesliga on Wednesday after falling 2-1 at Stuttgart.

Ibrahima Traore had the hosts in front after 11 minutes, but Augsburg responded before halftime to level the contest through Koo Ja-Cheol.

Augsburg has claimed one point from its previous five games, and the visitors were unable to add to that total on Wednesday as Vedad Ibisevic netted the winning goal 20 minutes from time.

Traore helped to set it up with a free kick that found the head of Ibisevic, who redirected the ball past goalkeeper Mohamed Amsif.

Bayer Leverkusen 4, Werder Bremen 1

Bremen, Germany - A pair of goals from Gonzalo Castro helped Bayer Leverkusen to a 4-1 win at Werder Bremen on Wednesday, moving the club into second place in the league table.

The result is Bayer's fifth win in six games and takes the club one point clear of third-place Borussia Dortmund.

Castro tallied the lone goal in the first half and added to his total shortly after the break to put Leverkusen up 2-0.

Nils Peterson answered quickly for the hosts to reduce the deficit to 2-1, but a pair of goals in the span of five minutes for Leverkusen put the result beyond reach.

Simon Rolfes scored on a close-range effort in the 74th minute to make it 3-1, while Jens Hegeler capped the scoring after tracking down Andre Schurrle's through ball.

Nurnberg 4, Hoffenheim 2

Nurnberg, Germany - Hoffenheim's worst-ever start to a Bundesliga season continued on Wednesday as the club dropped a 4-2 decision at Nurnberg, its third successive setback.

Nurnberg took a 2-1 lead into halftime after goals from Hiroshi Kiyotake and Per Nilsson, while Sven Schipplock scored in between the two for Hoffenheim.

Sebastian Polter's goal in the 69th had Nurnberg up two goals, but a penalty kick from Sejad Salihovic nine minutes from time gave Hoffenheim a chance.

However, the opportunity soon evaporated as Kiyotake tallied his second goal of the game five minutes later to put the result to bed.
