New York, NY – Stanford maintained its tenuous hold of the top ranking in women's college basketball.
The Cardinal knocked Baylor off the top perch of the Associated Press poll last week after beating the Lady Bears a few days earlier, and this week received 21 first-place votes from a nationwide media panel to keep the No. 1 spot. Stanford narrowly edged Connecticut, earning 953 points to 944 for UConn, which again garnered 17 first-place votes.
Baylor slipped to third last week and held the same spot after again picking up a first-place vote.
Duke, Notre Dame, Penn State, Louisville, Georgia and Kentucky remained fourth through ninth, while California swapped places with Maryland to complete the top 10.
After Maryland, the rest of the second 10 consists of Oklahoma, Texas, Purdue, Ohio State, Tennessee, St. John's, Oklahoma State, UCLA and Kansas. Tennessee moved up four spots from 20th for the biggest jump within the poll.
Nebraska, North Carolina, Dayton, Iowa State and West Virginia are the last five teams ranked. West Virginia tumbled 13 places from 12th after losses to LSU and Iowa.
Iowa State is the lone newcomer, replacing Vanderbilt. The Commodores were 17th, but lost to Virginia and Florida State last week.
