Former boxing champion Hector "Macho" Camacho was taken off life support early Saturday morning and died. He was 50 years old.

According to the San Juan newspaper El Nuevo Dia, doctors took Camacho off life support machines at 1:40 a.m. local time.

Camacho was shot in a car Tuesday and was declared "brain dead" Thursday morning.

According to police reports, Camacho was shot several times, including in the face, while seated in a Ford Mustang. The shots were fired from a person in a second vehicle and the driver of the Mustang was killed.

Police stated that several bags of cocaine were found in the car that Camacho occupied and that one of the bags was open.

A former champ in the super featherweight, lightweight and light welterweight divisions, Camacho posted a record of 79-6-3 during his career, including 45 wins by knockout. His last fight was in May of 2010.

Some of Camacho's biggest fights in a three-decade career came against Roberto Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard, Oscar De La Hoya and Julio Cesar Chavez.

Camacho battled drug and legal issues throughout his life and was shot in 2011 when he was the victim of a carjacking.
